Wow, the part about the amygdala being a little almond shaped drama queen really hit home; I might just use that analogy with my students when they declare a problem unsolvable. It's like a hard bug in Python that just needs a different approach not a complete rewrite and your point about 'yet' transforms that final 'I can't compile' into 'I can't compile... yet,' which makes all the difference.
I always told the folks that I counseled that your brain is the boss and that it gets messages from your five senses. When it hears, I canโt, it literally listens. I, too, suggested to add, โyet.โ
For someone recently separated, having spent 28 years devoted to bring up the family this was great to read. Itโs going to take a lot of practice but Iโm going to really work at implementing it.
I'm 55 and have so many can'ts, I don't know where to begin but I'll start with this - I can't get to a healthy weight, yet. My knees and hips need the "yet" desperately.
I love the yet. I've used this many times and I can feel the effect on my body. And, I'm with you on my current declaration of 'I haven't lost this weight....(drum toll please) .. yet. Thank you for this post today, it's liberating.
Wonderful article! Iโm a solution focused hypnotherapist and I often say to my clients, flip it a little, and say โIโm working towards..โ instead. But โYetโ is even better for those folks who get stuck with flipping their negative statements especially my menopausal ladies. Thank you so much! X
Absolutely agree with everything you articulated in this article. I heard something similar to what you have written here about 5 years ago and it changed my life. It shifted the way I started to think. I am in the health and wellness space and thought maybe I would be done teaching classes soon(as I am in my 50โs). Then I asked myself, why? This doesnโt need to be the case. I still feel vibrant and capable so I kept going. Thanks for the great reminder in this piece!
Great reinforcement. My father always told me when I would say โI canโt โ, growing up, that those words were not in our vocabulary. I continued to try and learn something new every day.
My โcanโtโ is โI canโt figure out numbers. Iโm a word person.โ But like the person who bounced one check in 2003 (22 years ago) I realize it doesnโt define me. I havenโt figured out numbers *yet*. The figuring will come in time. (And in the meantime, I can consult my daughter, a successful economics major!)
I love this advice because it really works...Adding Yet! When you brain keeps saying I can't ๐

Damn girl! I'm thrilled coming across a rare like-minded soul sister who speak the truth and notes what sounds like woo-woo isn't.
"Yet" is one of my favorite words right up there with "until recently". Ohh, I love those sweet activators ๐
Ellen, this post inspired me to share and shout. And BTW, speaking of performance
"Performance has no expiration date."
That's the motto of our upcoming podcast Legends Lounge by Helen Groom and yours truly.
I'd love to have you on!

Thank you, you really resonate with me!
Thank you so much for this! At 77 there are lots of things I havenโt done YET! Always a work in progress.

Your words are manna from heaven. Iโm 73.

Yet helped me grow in my profession when I thought I was done. Yet is going to help me grow more at 59 years young.

Love it. Easy to remember and at 76 Iโm going to take advantage of my brainโs neuroplasticity. Looking forward to the new year!!!
I can't conquer every area, all at once, where I'm overextended yet. Beautiful, thank you. Really helps.
